Ember mesh, bushfire mesh or fire-rated gutter guard?
Ember mesh, bushfire mesh and bushfire gutter guard describe metal mesh fitted over gutters and along the roof line for ember protection. When asking about fire rated gutter guard or BAL gutter guard, the product needs to be matched to your home's BAL requirements.
We fit metal mesh only — aluminium or stainless steel — with BAL-rated, AS 3959-compliant options available. Supplier product documentation is available on request.
Read about choosing mesh for your BAL level →How embers threaten your home
- During a bushfire, strong winds carry burning embers well ahead of the fire front.
- Those embers land in gutters that are full of dry leaves, bark and twigs.
- The dry litter can catch alight right next to your roof line and eaves — one of the common ways homes are put at risk.
What we install
Metal ember mesh fitted over your gutters and along the roof line, sealed at the edges so embers and leaves can't slip in underneath.
Metal mesh vs plastic mesh: metal mesh does not melt or burn, while plastic mesh can soften, melt or burn when exposed to embers and heat. For bushfire protection, metal is the right choice.
For ember protection we fit metal mesh only — aluminium or stainless steel — explained plainly, with the pros and cost difference for your roof.
What locals say
Such excellent service is rare these days, but Keith provides a detailed review of your property and gutter protection requirements, then completes the task with skill. He arrived on time and completed the installation as expected. The result was excellent. It is a great product, and we now feel safer if fires come and no more getting up on the roof and risking life to clean gutters. Highly recommended.
I had gutter guard installed through Coast Flow and from quote to installation my dealings with Keith were excellent. His communication in relation to the gutter guard product, process and timing was greatly appreciated. Very happy with the end result.
Very professional gutter guard installation with high attention to detail and remedied previous poor work.
Built to your BAL level
Homes in bushfire-prone areas are assigned a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL), which describes how exposed the home is to embers, radiant heat and flame.
Coast Flow can supply and install BAL-rated ember mesh that complies with Australian Standard AS 3959 (Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas) where your home requires it. Supplier product documentation is available on request.
Not sure of your BAL rating? Check with your local council or a bushfire consultant, and we'll match the product to it.
Why it matters locally
Kangaroo Valley, Berry and the surrounding bushland areas sit right up against eucalypt forest and escarpment country, where leaf litter builds up in gutters year-round.
The best time to get ember guard fitted is before fire season, so your gutters are clean and protected when conditions turn hot, dry and windy.
Ember guard is one part of preparing your home for bushfire season — along with clearing around the house and having a bushfire survival plan. See the NSW RFS website for a full checklist.

Meet Keith — the bloke who’ll be on your roof
I’m Keith, and these days most of my work is bushfire ember guard and gutter guard — fine metal mesh fitted to gutters, valleys, edges and curved rooflines around Berry, Kangaroo Valley, Kiama and the Southern Highlands, including homes rebuilt after bushfire. I’m a plumber by trade with more than 25 years of trade and construction experience, from starting out on large-scale projects in London to looking after small domestic repairs here in Berry. I know how water moves, and I look for potential trouble before it turns into major damage and costly repairs. That’s why I take the time to fit every system properly — matching it to your roof, keeping water flowing and helping you look after your home for the long term. On bushfire jobs I check the whole roof line so there are no gaps left for embers to get in.

Kangaroo Valley· August 2026
What we did: 2mm aluminium ember mesh profiled to a corrugated Colorbond roof, colour-matched and fixed with saddles and clips.
The result: Multiple gutter clears a year down to a quick check once a year, after autumn leaf-fall.

Far Meadow, Berry· October 2026
What we did: Full roof clean, gutters cleared on the house and the barn, then metal ember mesh fitted along the roofline.
The result: Both buildings protected against wind-blown embers and leaf litter, without the owners climbing ladders every few months.

Kangaroo Valley
What we did: Ember mesh to the highest BAL rating the rebuild called for, fitted across a tricky roof profile — curved edges, valleys and a specialist Colorbond colour.
The result: The family lost their home to bushfire and rebuilt it to a high specification. Every gutter and roof edge is now protected to the same standard, with no gaps left for embers.

Get My Free QuoteQuestions we get asked
Is your ember mesh BAL rated / AS 3959 compliant?
Yes — BAL-rated, AS 3959-compliant options are available, and we'll match the product to your home's BAL level where it's required. Supplier product documentation is available on request.
Does ember mesh also stop leaves?
Yes. The same metal mesh that keeps embers out also stops leaves, bark and seed pods building up in your gutters, so there's less dry fuel sitting on the roof line.
Will it fit my existing gutters?
Almost always. We fit to tile, Colorbond, corrugated, Kliploc and Trimdek roofs using trims and fixings that sit flush. If your gutters are badly rusted or sagging, we'll tell you straight before quoting.
How long does installation take?
Timing depends on your roof, access and the installation scope. Keith will discuss this when quoting. Fast, reliable and local — based in Berry, we turn up when we say we will.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the mesh, your roof, the size of your home and whether a BAL-rated product is needed. Keith will measure up for free and give you a fixed price in writing — no callout fee.
