Gutter Care

How often should you clean your gutters on the NSW South Coast?

The short answer

Most South Coast NSW homes without gutter guard need a proper gutter clean twice a year — late autumn after leaf-fall, and late spring before storm and bushfire season. Homes under gum trees, paperbarks or pines usually need three to four cleans annually. Gutter guard stretches intervals to two or three years.

There's no universal answer — gutter cleaning frequency depends on how many trees hang over your roof, your local rainfall pattern, and whether you already have gutter guard installed. Here's how Coast Flow guides South Coast homeowners.

The baseline for most South Coast homes

Without gutter guard, most homes in Berry, Kiama, Gerringong and Nowra need a proper gutter clean at least twice a year — typically late autumn (after leaf-fall) and late spring (before summer storms and bushfire season).

When you need more than twice a year

If your home sits under gum trees, paperbarks or pines, plan for three or four cleans a year. Gum nuts and stringy bark are particularly bad — they clog downpipes faster than leaves alone.

  • Heavy tree cover: 3–4 cleans per year
  • Paperbarks or pines directly overhead: quarterly
  • Two-storey home with steep pitch: at least twice
  • Rainwater tank owners: before every wet season

When gutter guard changes the maths

Quality gutter guard (professionally installed) drops the requirement to an annual visual inspection and flush. That's a fraction of the work — and, if it's AS3959-compliant mesh, it also reduces ember-attack risk during bushfires.

Signs you've left it too long

If you notice any of these, book a clean now — waiting turns a small job into a fascia-replacement job.

  • Water spilling over the gutter lip in rain
  • Plants sprouting out of the gutter
  • Sagging gutter sections
  • Water stains down the fascia or wall
  • Musty smell in the ceiling cavity

Key takeaways

  • Most South Coast homes: 2 cleans per year minimum
  • Under gum trees: 3–4 cleans per year
  • With quality gutter guard: annual visual inspection is usually enough
  • Don't wait for overflow — by then, fascia damage has started
