Ember Guard on a Kangaroo Valley Bushfire Rebuild

A Kangaroo Valley family lost their home to bushfire and rebuilt it to a high specification. We fitted ember mesh across a tricky roofline — curved edges, valleys and a specialist Colorbond colour — so the new home is protected from the roof edge in.

The challenge

The family lost their home to bushfire and rebuilt from the ground up, and the roofline showed how carefully that rebuild had been specified: a sweeping curved edge around the front of the house, valleys where the roof planes meet, and a specialist Colorbond colour chosen to suit the finish. Off-the-shelf mesh doesn't sit properly on a roof like that — it tends to get cut short at the curves or left out of the valleys, and those are exactly the spots where leaf litter collects and embers can get a foothold.

What we did

We fitted ember mesh to the highest BAL rating the rebuild called for, run along the full roofline rather than just the easy straight sections. The curved edges were contoured to suit, the valleys were covered, and the mesh was fixed with screwed trim strips shaped to the roof profile so it follows the line of the gutter. The mesh colour was matched to the specialist Colorbond so the protection doesn't stand out from the roof.

• Ember mesh fitted along the full roofline
• Curved roof edges contoured to suit
• Roof valleys covered
• Mesh fixed with screwed trim strips to the roof profile
• Colour matched to the specialist Colorbond roof
• Fitted to the highest BAL rating the rebuild required

The outcome

Every gutter and roof edge on the home is protected to the same standard, with no gaps left for embers and no leaf litter building up in the gutter line to become fuel. It's one of the most impressive jobs we've been asked to do — and the kind of roofline that shows quickly whether a mesh install was fitted properly or not.
