Old Plastic Gutter Mesh Removal & Heavy Gutter Clean — Shell Cove

Removed brittle plastic gutter mesh from a tiled roof in Shell Cove and completed a heavy gutter clean after seven years with no maintenance — moss, compacted leaf litter and roof grit had turned the gutters into garden beds.

The challenge

The owners had inherited cheap black plastic drop-in mesh that had been sitting in the gutters for around seven years without a single clean. Coastal UV had made the plastic brittle, so it had cracked, sagged and pulled away from the tile line in sections. Instead of keeping debris out, it was trapping it: compacted leaf litter, tile grit and thick moss had built up under and over the mesh, and in places the muck was growing plants. Water couldn't reach the downpipes, so overflow was running back under the tiles and down the fascia — a common pattern we see on Shell Cove and Shellharbour homes where salt-laden coastal wind carries fine grit into the gutter line.

What we did

We worked the roof safely off ladders and roof-safe footing (Keith holds RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights and a NSW White Card), lifting and removing every section of the old plastic mesh so nothing brittle was left to break down further. Gutters were then hand-cleared of the heavy compacted material rather than blown out, because seven years of moss and grit turns to a wet mat that a blower simply smears around. Downpipes were flushed and flow-tested, valleys were checked for build-up, and all debris was bagged and taken away. We finished with a before-and-after photo report so the owners could see exactly what came out — and a straight recommendation on whether to go back to a properly installed aluminium mesh or stay on a scheduled clean.
