Why do gutters overflow in heavy rain — and what should you do?

The short answer

Gutters overflow when the water cannot exit faster than it arrives. The usual culprits are leaf litter blocking the downpipe, a sagging gutter holding water, too few or small downpipes, or an incorrect fall. A gutter that overflows in a storm is more than a nuisance. The water running down your fascia, walls and foundations can cause rot, termite-attracting damp, and concrete undermining. The good news is that most overflow problems are cheap and easy to fix once you know what to look for.
