The Australian Standard AS3959 sets the construction requirements for buildings in bushfire-prone areas. Compliant ember-rated gutter mesh (aperture no greater than 2mm, non-combustible material) stops embers lodging in dry gutter debris — the single most common ignition point on a home during a fire event.
Why ember entry is the real risk
During bushfires, wind-driven embers can travel kilometres ahead of the fire front. When they land on a home covered in dry leaves — in the gutters, on the roof, or against timber decks — they smoulder, ignite, and spread. Compliant ember mesh closes the gaps where embers would otherwise enter.

What 'AS3959 compliant' actually means
A gutter guard is only bushfire-rated when the mesh itself, the fixings, and the installation method all meet AS3959. That means non-combustible mesh (typically aluminium or stainless steel), a maximum 2mm aperture, and correct sealing at valleys, hips and roof-wall junctions.

+Is standard gutter guard enough for a bushfire zone?
No. Only mesh that meets AS3959 (non-combustible material, max 2mm aperture, correctly installed) provides ember protection. Plastic or wide-aperture mesh may keep leaves out but does nothing for embers.

+Do I still need to clean my gutters?
