Gutter Guard Materials Compared — Aluminium, Steel, Plastic
Not all gutter guard is created equal. The material determines lifespan, bushfire rating and how well it holds up in salt air.
Gutter guard mesh comes in three main materials — aluminium, stainless steel and plastic (polymer). Each has trade-offs. The right choice depends on your roof, your bushfire zone, your proximity to the coast, and how long you want the product to last.
Aluminium mesh
The most common premium option in Australia. Powder-coated aluminium mesh is lightweight, non-combustible, and available in Colorbond® colours to match the roof. It handles South Coast conditions well and, when correctly installed, comes with long manufacturer warranties.

Stainless steel mesh
The premium option for very high fire-risk or heavy-debris sites. Stainless steel is the toughest material and offers the longest lifespan, particularly for BAL-FZ properties. It's more expensive than aluminium and has fewer colour options.

Plastic (polymer) mesh
The cheapest option, and the one to be careful with. Plastic mesh is not bushfire-rated, becomes brittle under UV over time, and is prone to sagging. Coast Flow does not recommend plastic mesh for permanent installations in the Illawarra, South Coast or Southern Highlands.
